Beginning Bird Hikes 1/6/10 Birds are fascinating and watching them can be an awe-inspiring experience. Catching a glimpse of these gorgeous creatures however can be frustrating and learning how to identify all of them can be overwhelming! Join our Naturalist staff and other guest leaders (when available) Sunday and Wednesday mornings at Strawtown Koteewi Park and we will learn together. This will be a great opportunity for bird-watchers of all levels. You may begin anytime during the season and come as often as you like. Pre-registration is not required. Bring your binoculars! These hikes will meet at the Taylor Center of Natural Hitory @ 9:00 am.

What’s This Rock? 1/9/2010 Do you want to know where all those rocks you find come from and what are they made of?  Come to Strawtown Koteewi Park and check out Indiana’s rocks and fossils with Walter Gray of the Indiana Geologic Survey.  This fun, hands-on, and educational program is ideal for scouts working on their geology badges or anyone interested in geology. Star and Satellite Gazing Tours 1/16/10 Join Dr. Ronald Weiss, adjunct professor of Astronomy and Earth Science for Vincennes University, at Strawtown Koteewi Park for a fascinating evening of star and satellite watching. Amateur astronomer Dan Malone, of Wabash Valley Astronomical Society, will be assisting Dr. Weiss as the group learns about and attempts to view the stars, planets, constellations, satellites, and deep sky objects that are visible each month. In the event that the sky is cloudy, an indoor astronomy program is planned. You are welcome to bring your own telescope or binoculars as well. This program will meet near the Taylor Center of Natural History at 5:30 pm. We ask that pets are left at home during this program.
Kids Helping Kids Garage Sale 1/16/10 Join us at the Forest Park Inn & Lodge from 10:00am to 1:00 pm for a garage sale for kids, by kids! Children run their tables, with adult assistance. All items for sale must be fun stuff:  toys, games, dress-up attire, books, bikes, and DVDs. No clothes please! Food and refreshments available courtesy of the Hamilton County Auxiliary. Admission is $1 per person, each table is $10 for vendors. Admission and table fees go towards Noblesville Parks and Recreation program scholarships. Table space is limited; register early! Collection Identification 1/30/10 Do you have some arrowheads, stone tools, or other Native American artifacts about which you would like to know more? Archaeologist Jim Mohow will be at Strawtown Koteewi Park to help artifact collectors identify personal collection pieces. When possible, Mr. Mohow will give you the dates and stories associated with these fascinating relics of the past and the people who used them. Mr. Mohow will be on site from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm and the cost is free.

Noblesville Symphony Orchestra "Love is in the Air" 2/14/10

Join us on Valentine's Day at 4pm in Noblesville High School's Auditorium for the "Love is in the Air" concert which includes NSO's tribute to music of romance with selections by Rachmaninov, Tchaikovsky and love songs made famous by Nat King Cole.

To make "Love is in the Air" more romantic, the NSO has partnered with local italian eatery, Matteo's, offering concert goers a special menu to compliment the concert. You can eat before or after the concert by reservation-only.

Maple Syrup Program @ Bray Park 3/6/10

Get “sappy” from 10am—1pm with Hamilton County Parks. The staff will be demonstrating the tapping process on some of the same trees that the Bray Family tapped over the last 150 years. Traditional and modern equipment used in the process will be featured as well as information about the folklore, history, and facts about Maple trees.

Forest Park Caboose Rides 4/24/10

Looking for a historic train ride that requires less time and money? Try our caboose shuttles, which run most Saturdays and Sundays in Noblesville's Forest Park. The Caboose Rides run from Hobbs Station at the train museum to the east bank of the White River, approximately a half block from the Noblesville Square, and then on to 196th Street for a scenic view of the park and the return to the station.

The Caboose Ride ticket includes admission to the train museum and allows the passenger to ride the caboose as many times as desired, or to disembark in Noblesville for dining and shopping activities. Bring the whole family and ride with us. The evening of fun starts with a departure from the train museum in Noblesville's Forest Park. The ride to Tipton is approximately 45 minutes.

The cost of dinner is separate from the train ride. Reservations are required and passengers have two options to make reservations. The first is by calling the Indiana Transportation Museum's visitor services manager, who is reached by calling 317-773-6000, or by calling the Museum's gift shop at 317-776-7887. The days and hours for both are listed on the ITM's website @ www.itm.org. Reservations made via telephone must be 53 hours prior to the train's departure (noon on the Thursday prior to the Saturday excursion).

 

The train will arrive back in Noblesville at approximately 8:15pm, plenty early to make children's bedtimes, so bring the family and join us on "The Pizza PLUS Express" to Tipton.

As the season progresses the "Pizza PLUS Express" becomes more popular because of word-of-mouth. Trips early in the season usually sell out a few days in advance, while the October excursions are frequently sold out by mid-August. Don't be disappointed in the fall. Make your reservations early!

Orienteering 101 @ Strawtown Koteewi Park 5/1/10

Point your compass toward Strawtown Koteewi Park for hands-on fun as we learn to use a map and compass, understand topography, and tackle a compass-led orienteering course. Beginning Bird Hikes @ Strawtown Koteewi Park 5/5/10

Birds are fascinating and watching them can be an awe-inspiring experience. Catching a glimpse of these gorgeous creatures however can be frustrating and learning how to identify all of them can be overwhelming! Join our Naturalist staff and other guest leaders (when available) Sunday and Wednesday mornings and we will learn together. This will be a great opportunity for bird-watchers of all levels. You may begin anytime during the season and come as often as you like. Pre-registration is not required. Bring your binoculars!

Star & Satellite Gazing Tours 5/15/10

Join Dr. Ronald Weiss, adjunct professor of Astronomy and Earth Science for Vincennes University, for a fascinating evening of star and satellite watching. Amateur astronomer Dan Malone, of Wabash Valley Astronomical Society, will be assisting Dr. Weiss as the group learns about and attempts to view the stars, planets, constellations, satellites, and deep sky objects that are visible each month. In the event that the sky is cloudy, an indoor astronomy program is planned. You are welcome to bring your own telescope or binoculars, but we ask that pets are left at home. This program will meet near the Taylor Center of Natural History.

Star & Satellite Gazing Tours 6/12/10

Join us at Strawtown Koteewi Park as Dr. Ronald Weiss, adjunct professor of Astronomy and Earth Science for Vincennes University, for a fascinating evening of star and satellite watching. Amateur astronomer Dan Malone of Wabash Valley Astronomical Society will be assisting Dr. Weiss as a the group learns about and attempts to view the stars, planets, constellations, satellites and deep sky objects that are visible each month. In the event that the sky is cloudy, an indoor astronomy program is planned. You are welcome to bring your own telescope or binoculars but they ask that pets be left at home. The program will meet near the Taylor Center of Natural History at 9pm and the cost is free.

Dinner in the Diner 6/12/10

This train trip is ideal for many occasions and would be great for any other special evenings you can think of.

 

Dine in luxury aboard the restored Louisville & Nashville #2728, our 1930 dining car. A complete four-course meal is served monthly in the 'Cross Keys Tavern' diner. Each month's event is limited to 36 diners at six tables for four and six tables for two.

 

All 'Dinner in the Diner' trains depart from the train museum in Noblesville's Forest Park. Attire for the event ranges from business casual to semi-formal, depending on the reason for celebrating on 'Dinner in the Diner.' Children are welcome on this excursion with purchase of a ticket, but passengers are asked to be considerate of fellow diners. The Hamiltonian 6/12/10

Looking for something different for a Saturday evening outing? Gather your friends for an unforgettable experience aboard a streamlined passenger train right out of the pages of history. View the passing scenery of northern Hamilton County on this nostalgic beauty as you enjoy hors d'oeuvres (included in your fare) and cocktails from a cash bar. The Hamiltonian runs on the Saturday evenings indicated on the Indiana Transportation Museum's website www.itm.org. You can select one of our exciting dinner destinations in downtown Noblesville: Matteo's Ristorante Italiano (317-774-9771) or The Hamilton Restaurant (317-770-4545). Both are within a short walk of your station shop. When you are making your reservation simply let the visitor services manager know where you would like to eat and she will reserve your table. You may choose any other restaurant on the Square in Noblesville but might need to make your own reservations.

 

Cost for the train ride and hors d'oeuvres is $25 per person and your restaurant will collect the price of your dinner and gratuity after your meal. Cocktails on the train are served from a cash bar. Be sure to arrive at the Fishers Station (116th Street half a mile west of Exit 5 off I-69) before the 6pm departure.

 

At the end of your meal, The Hamiltonian will return through the starlit evening to Fishers Station. While children are welcome, this event is often a parent's getaway evening. Enjoy the trip!!!

On eight Saturdays the Great Towns Train travels into northern Hamilton County departing at 1pm from Noblesville. It will pass through Cicero and Arcadia before stopping in Atlanta. The Town of Cicero presents a 3 day celebration for July 4th.  The celebration ends Sunday night with a fantastic fireworks display, fired from and reflected in the waters of Morse Lake.  The Indiana Transportation Museum helps with the rest by providing transportation via the Lights Over Lake Morse Train on July 2nd and 3rd and the Fourth of July. Park at the Museum in Forest Park and ride the Museum's historic railway to Cicero. On Friday July 2nd attend the fish fry at Red Bridge Park. Catch the earlier train at 6pm or the second train at 7:30 and return after the fun ends at 9pm. On Friday all trains stop only at Jackson Street in Cicero.

Reservations are not required for any of these trains.  However, due to the popularity of the event and to prevent over-crowding on the return on July 4th, reservations will be accepted for the Sunday trains and the trains could become SOLD OUT prior to that day.  Reservations are HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for Sunday's trains. The Town of Cicero presents a 3 day celebration for July 4th.  The celebration ends Sunday night with a fantastic fireworks display, fired from and reflected in the waters of Morse Lake.  The Indiana Transportation Museum helps with the rest by providing transportation via the Lights Over Lake Morse Train on July 2nd and 3rd and the Fourth of July. Park at the Museum in Forest Park and ride the Museum's historic railway to Cicero.

On Saturday July 3rd you can choose which events to see and how long to stay in Cicero. Depart Forest Park at 9am and arrive in Cicero in time for the Festival Parade that starts and ends at Community Park. Depart Forest Park at 1pm and arrive in Cicero as the Kids Carnival begins. It runs to 5pm. The under 6 and under 8 "Soccer Friendlies Tournament" also takes place from 1pm to 5pm. Depart Forest Park at 4pm to attend the talent show the starts at 5:30pm and ends at 8:30pm. Depart Forest Park at 7pm just to visit the activities at Community Park in the cool of the evening.

All activities on Saturday center around Community Park on the south side of Cicero so all of our trains will discharge and board passengers only at that location.  In addition to the events listed above, Community Park will also host Civil War and Pioneer encampments.  Vendors will also be there. Trains depart from Community Park for the return to Forest Park in Noblesville at 11:30am, 2:30pm, 5:30pm and 9pm.  Choose when you want to go and how long you want to stay.

July 4th Parade & Fireworks Festival 7/4/10
The parade is sponsored by Community Bank and will begin at 5pm at the corner of 16th Street and Harrison Street.  This year's theme is "Honoring Our Hometown Heritage" and the grand marshals are Isabelle Harger and Jerry Snyder.  The parade route will be 16th Street to Logan Street; Logan to 9th Street; 9th to Monument Street; and Monument to 16th Street. Immediately after the parade, the free Fireworks Festival, presented by Industrial Dielectrics, Inc., will take place on the grounds of Noblesville High School from 6pm - 10pm.  There will be several activities for people of all ages.  Festival goers will enjoy the music of Jayne Bond and the Pink Martinis from 7pm - 10pm; a mini race car simulator (sponsored by E & B Paving); the classic car show (sponsored by Republic Waste Services); a rock climbing wall; ladder golf and cornhole tournaments (winners will receive a $50 Best Buy gift card); and the Kids Zone with plenty of activities for children.  Food vendors will be at the Festival or people may bring picnic dinners.Volunteers are still needed to work a two hour shift at the festival.  For more information about volunteering or for additional details about the parade or festival, please contact Cara at (317) 776-6367 or email cculp@noblesville.in.us.

Depart from Forest Park at 5pm and arrive at Community Park to visit the end of activities there.  Then, stroll to the center of Cicero to watch the music festival with its main stage at Jackson and Main Streets. After the music move toward the lake for the water ski show. The 5pm train will stop at Community Park and depart from there at 6pm. Depart from Forest Park at 8pm with just enough time to find seats for the fireworks that begin about 10:15 PM.  This train will stop at Jackson Street, close to the fireworks launching point.

  • Beginning Bird Hikes 7/7/10

    Birds are fascinating and watching them can be an awe-inspiring experience. Catching a glimpse of these gorgeous creatures however can be frustrating and learning how to identify all of them can be overwhelming! Join our Naturalist staff and other guest leaders (when available) Sunday and Wednesday mornings and we will learn together. This will be a great opportunity for bird-watchers of all levels. You may begin anytime during the season and come as often as you like. Pre-registration is not required. Bring your binoculars!

    Strawtown Koteewi Park Prairie Hike 7/10/10
    Come explore the ‘Koteewi-side’ of Strawtown Koteewi Park! Koteewi (ko-TAY-wee) is the Miami Native American word for prairie, and we have been working with ecological engineers to restore the over 300 acre historical prairie that once existed on the site. Approximately 80 acres of prairie have currently been planted at the park, and our naturalist staff is excited about showing it off. Information regarding the prairie’s history and use by Native Americans and early European settlers, as well as identification of the many plants and their medicinal attributes, will be discussed during the hike. This hike will begin at the Taylor Center of Natural History.

    Great Towns Train 7/17/10

    On eight Saturdays the Great Towns Train travels into northern Hamilton County departing at 1pm from Noblesville. It will pass through Cicero and Arcadia before stopping in Atlanta. The train then departs for the return to Noblesville at 2:15pm. Cost is $8 for adults and $5 for children 2-12. Call 317-773-6000 for your reservations.

Attire for the event ranges from business casual to semi-formal, depending on the reason for celebrating on 'Dinner in the Diner.' Children are welcome on this excursion with purchase of a ticket, but passengers are asked to be considerate of fellow diners.     Join Dr. Ronald Weiss, adjunct professor of Astronomy and Earth Science for Vincennes University,for a fascinating evening of star and satellite watching. Amateur astronomerDan Malone of Wabash Valley Astronomical Society, will be assisting Dr. Weiss as the group learns about and attempts to view the stars, planets, constellations, satellites, and deep sky objects that are visible each month. In the event that the sky is cloudy, an indoor astronomy program is planned. You are welcome to bring your own telescope or binoculars, but we ask that pets be left at home. This program will meet near the Taylor Center of Natural History.

    The Hamiltonian 8/28/10

    View the passing scenery of northern Hamilton County on this nostalgic beauty as you enjoy hors d'oeuvres (included in your fare) and cocktails from a cash bar. The Hamiltonian runs on the Saturday evenings indicated on the Indiana Transportation Museum's website www.itm.org. Reservations should be made by calling the Museum's visitor services manager at (317) 773-6000.

     

    You can select one of our exciting dinner destinations in downtown Noblesville: Matteo's Ristorante Italiano (317-774-9771) or The Hamilton Restaurant (317-770-4545). Both are within a short walk of your station shop. When you are making your reservation simply let the visitor services manager know where you would like to eat and she will reserve your table. You may choose any other restaurant on the Square in Noblesville but might need to make your own reservations.

     

    Cost for the train ride and hors d'oeuvres is $25 per person and your restaurant will collect the price of your dinner and gratuity after your meal. Cocktails on the train are served from a cash bar. Be sure to arrive at the Fishers Station (116th Street half a mile west of Exit 5 off I-69) before the 6pm departure.

     

    At the end of your meal, The Hamiltonian will return through the starlit evening to Fishers Station. While children are welcome, this event is often a parent's getaway evening. Enjoy the trip!!!
